BMW 5 Series Exterior

In this newest design iteration, the 5 Series features headlights that embrace each of the signature BMW twin kidney grilles. The overall design aesthetic is that of a vehicle that's been crafted with a keen eye for detail, offering a classic take on the BMW sedan that's sure to please drivers from Southborough to Westborough.

BMW 5 Series Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the BMW 5 Series top marks for crash results across the board, noting that the sedan earned a Superior rating for front crash prevention when it's equipped with available Frontal Collision Warning with city Collision Mitigation.

All 5 Series models come with adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, drowsy driver monitoring and the BMW Active Protection System, which automatically closes the windows and moonroof and tightens the front seatbelts when it senses a possible collision. After impact, the system activates the brakes to keep the sedan in place.

Available safety and driver-assistance features include front and rear parking sensors, night vision camera with pedestrian detection, head-up display, surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, automatic braking and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection.

BMW 5 Series Performance

Four engine options are available for the BMW 5 Series, starting with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That same inline-4 teams with a synchronous electric motor to form a hybrid powertrain that generates a combined 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The 3.0-liter inline-6 powers out 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, while a 4.4-iter turbocharged V8 that propels the M550i xDrive manufactures 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.

All 5 Series sedans team their engines with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and can be equipped with either standard rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; we tend to favor springing for the all-wheel drive to provide a more sure-footed driving environment during inclement weather. If you commute from Northborough to Worcester, you'll be pleased to know that the BMW 5 Series delivers some of the best fuel economies in its segment -- achieving an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of up to 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
